How to tell if your child used AI on homework
Reviewed 2026-10-19 from the same public pages as the directory. If a tool page says a price or a privacy claim is unverified, this guide does not fill it in.
You usually cannot prove that a child used AI from the page alone. What you can do is ask them to explain the work out loud, then redo one problem without the screen.
This page does not cite a detector score or a study. We do not have one. A clue is a reason to ask. It is not a verdict.
A check you can actually run
- Pick one problem from the homework. Ask the child to solve it again on paper and narrate each step. If they cannot, treat the assignment as unfinished.
- Look at the teacher’s instructions before you look for “AI style.” Some classes allow a hint. Some ban apps. The assignment’s rule is the one that counts.
- A solution that matches a camera app, step for step, is a reason to ask whether Photomath or a similar solver was open. See is Photomath cheating?
- Writing that uses words the child does not use in conversation is another reason to ask. It does not prove ChatGPT. The age rule, if they are under 13, is in can a 10 year old use ChatGPT?
- Write the house rule down. The family AI rules printable says the child should still be able to explain every step. Pair it with tools that teach instead of answering.
