AI reading tutor for a struggling 2nd grader

Reviewed 2026-10-19 from the same public pages as the directory. If a tool page says a price or a privacy claim is unverified, this guide does not fill it in.

The AI reading tutor in this directory that listens to a child read and covers 2nd grade is Ello. It is for ages 4–9, about pre-K through grade 3, and daily activities are free to start.

The current Ello premium price was not published on the pages we read, so no dollar amount is listed. Ello is not a worksheet solver. The wider 2nd-grade list, including apps that are not AI, is best reading tools for 2nd grade.

What to try with a struggling reader

  1. Have the child read aloud, with you nearby. Ello’s listing describes a tutor that listens, corrects pronunciation, and builds phonics. Ello says it complies with COPPA and asks for parental consent for some features, including voice.
  2. For free phonics and books with no chatbot, use Khan Academy Kids. Store listings say it is free, with no ads and no subscriptions, for ages 2–8. The Play listing says it is COPPA-compliant. The dedicated kids privacy URL did not load during this review.
  3. Duolingo ABC is free, with no ads. Google Play says preschool through 1st grade. The App Store also says 2nd grade and ages 0–5. This directory does not treat 2nd grade as settled. The safety note is is Duolingo ABC safe for kids?
  4. Epic is a book library for ages 12 and under, not an AI tutor. A current family price was not verified. See is Epic safe for kids?
  5. Ask the teacher which skills are stuck, letters, blends, or fluency, before you add another app. Sign the family AI rules printable so a chatbot is not the reading plan. The longer K–3 list is reading apps for early readers.

SplashLearn includes reading through 5th grade and is paid after a 7-day trial. It is not a free AI tutor.
