Is Mathway safe for kids? A parent's guide

Reviewed 2026-10-15 from public pages already cited in this directory. If a minimum age, an ad claim, or a data claim was not on those pages, this note says to check the app's terms.

Mathway, from Chegg, solves a problem you type or photograph. It also covers chemistry and physics. Official pages disagree about how much of the written work is free.

Minimum age and account rules

Mathway is not marketed as a children’s product. We did not find a COPPA kids’ mode or a numbered minimum age on the homepage, the Premium terms, or the App Store listing we read. Check the app's terms. Treat it as a parent tool, not a 3rd grader’s own account. K–2 is left off the directory page because it is a solver, not because an age number was published.

Data and ads

What Mathway collects, and whether it shows ads, was not in the pages we reviewed. Check the app's terms.

Teaches or gives answers

The product returns the solution. Steps can help someone study a method. The primary job is still the answer, so this directory marks it “gives answers.”

Parent verdict

Fine for a parent checking a method on algebra or higher. A weak choice for a child using it alone.

  • Let the child try the problem before anyone opens the camera.
  • Read the checkout screen. The homepage FAQ and the Premium terms do not describe the free tier the same way.
  • Check the app's terms before a child creates an account.

The full directory note is on the tool page. Age cutoffs for more apps are in is my kid old enough? The teaches-versus-answers labels are explained in apps that teach vs. give answers.
