Is Khanmigo safe for kids? A parent's guide

Reviewed 2026-10-15 from public pages already cited in this directory. If a minimum age, an ad claim, or a data claim was not on those pages, this note says to check the app's terms.

Khanmigo is Khan Academy’s paid AI tutor for families in the United States. The parent plan is $4 a month or $44 a year and can cover up to 10 children under 18. The regular Khan Academy library stays free.

Minimum age and account rules

The parent page says sign-up is for adults 18 and older. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or a school district to get access. A teacher-assigned writing activity is the other path named in the directory note. Khan Academy says it can help from elementary school through college. A minimum grade inside elementary school was not stated. Check the app's terms if you need a younger cutoff than “under 18, with a parent.”

Data and ads

Khan Academy’s responsible AI page and the parent materials say parents can read chat history, moderation can email an adult, names are not shared with the model provider, and student data is not used to train those models. Child accounts are blocked from features that would let a child post personal information. Whether Khanmigo shows ads was not in those pages. Check the app's terms.

Teaches or gives answers

The parent page says Khanmigo does not give the answer and instead helps a child think it through. That is Khan Academy’s design claim. A child can still try to push a chatbot, and the replies can still be wrong. This directory marks it “teaches.”

Parent verdict

A reasonable chatbot if you are the adult on the account and you will actually read the chats. It is not a kids’ app a child signs up for alone.

  • Keep the parent login. Enable the child from that account.
  • Read a few chats. The “does not give the answer” line is the company’s claim, not a guarantee that every reply is right.
  • The parent page we read still said Khanmigo uses GPT-4. We did not confirm whether that model line is still current.

The full directory note is on the tool page. Age cutoffs for more apps are in is my kid old enough? The teaches-versus-answers labels are explained in apps that teach vs. give answers.
