Our Family's AI Homework Rules
For parents: AI can be a great homework helper when it helps kids think, not when it thinks for them. Read these rules together, talk about why each one matters, then sign and hang it where homework happens.
Our Rules
- 1
Try it yourself first. Give it a real try for 10 minutes before asking AI for help.
- 2
Ask AI to explain, not to answer. Say “Help me understand” or “Give me a hint,” not “What’s the answer?”
- 3
Show your work. If AI helped, you should still be able to explain every step in your own words.
- 4
Check with a grown-up. Ask before using a new AI app or website.
- 5
Keep personal info private. Never type your full name, address, school, phone number, passwords, or photos into AI.
- 6
Follow your teacher's rules. If your teacher says no AI on an assignment, that's the rule.
- 7
AI can be wrong. Double-check facts with your book, your notes, or a grown-up.
- 8
It's okay to say “I used AI.” Being honest about getting help is always the right thing.
- 9
Use it at the homework spot. AI homework help happens where a grown-up is nearby.
- 10
Take a break if you're stuck. Frustrated? Step away, then try again or ask a person.
Grown-up tips
- Check age limits. Many AI tools are 13+ under U.S. privacy law (COPPA). Use kid-specific tools or your own account for younger children.
- Sit nearby for younger kids. For K–3, stay in the room and use AI together.
- Pick tools that teach. Choose apps that give hints and step-by-step explanations, not just answers.
- Review the chat history. Look through conversations now and then and talk about what you see.
